Visit the “Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek” in Weimar

The Duchess Anna Amalia Library was founded as “ducal library” of Herzog Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar in 1691. It was a research library for literature- and cultural history which was accessibly to the public. In 1991, on the occasion of the library’s 300th anniversary it was named after Herzogin Anna Amalia, its greatest patron. By now, around one million literary certificates from the 9th till 21st century are stored there. The emphasis of the collection, however, lies on the German literature periods around 1800, from Enlightenment to the Late Romantic. Also famous is the oval shaped and over three floors expanding Rococo hall. Due to a disastrous fire the hall, the historic building and part of the inventory was badly damaged in 2004. Around 50,000 books were destroyed in the fire and around 118,000 books suffered varying degrees of damage. The restoration work of the building lasted until 2007, however, the restoration and conservation work of the library inventory is in some cases still continuing.

Visit the “Rotkäppchen” champagne producer in Freyburg/Unstrut with tasting and supper

“Rotkäppchen” is one of the most successful champagne brands in Germany with a long tradition in sparkling wine and champagne production. The champagne cellars are directly located at the 60 kilometres long “Saale-Unstrut-Wine-Route”, an area with 1600 hours of sunshine per year and an average temperature of 9.1°C (48.4°F). In the year 998, winemaking in this area along the rivers Saale and Unstrut was mentioned in a document for the first time. Meanwhile there thrive 50 vine varieties upon the hillsides along the river valleys. The company “Rotkäppchen” has been developed successively in this amazing scenery since 1856 and there we will have a tasting of different sparkling wines and champagnes as well as a supper.
